Talk about a complete 180!
When President Trump announced a travel ban on travelers from China, Joe Biden initially called the President’s actions xenophobic.
Now, he supports the ban and says the President should have acted even sooner!
Recall that many of those in the Democratic Party and media, in addition to the WHO, initially derided the President’s travel ban. At best, they simply said it wouldn’t work. At worst, they said it wouldn’t work and it’s racist.
Take a look at one of Biden’s speeches back in March, where he specifically criticizes the travel ban:
Fox News reports on Biden's change of heart:
Former Vice President Joe Biden now backs President Trump’s restrictions on travel from China amid the global coronavirus pandemic, his campaign said Friday.
Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield told CNN Friday that the former vice president “supports travel bans that are guided by medical experts, advocated by public health officials and backed by a full strategy.”
“Science supported this ban, therefore he did too,” she told the outlet.
However, Biden has repeatedly criticized President Trump and his coronavirus response, most recently Thursday. “Donald Trump ignored the warnings. He failed to act,” he tweeted.
Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale blasted the Democratic 2020 presidential primary front-runner on Twitter over the apparent travel ban reversal.
“This is a long time lag, even for Sleepy Joe,” he wrote, accusing Biden of bashing the travel restrictions as “xenophobia” and “fear-mongering” in the roughly two months since they were implemented.
“That’s not leadership” Parscale continued. “That’s bad judgement.”
President Trump announced the restrictions on travelers entering the U.S. from China on Jan. 31. The next day, Biden ripped the president on Twitter.
“We need to lead the way with science – not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering,” he wrote. “He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.
Many were quick to point out Biden's hypocrisy:
The Washington Examiner adds:
The support for the travel ban comes weeks after Trump and his allies repeatedly asserted that Biden called Trump's China travel restrictions xenophobic. Others pointed out that Biden did not explicitly call the policy itself xenophobic.
On Jan. 31, the day that Trump implemented the travel restrictions, the former vice president said at a town hall in Iowa: “This is no time for Donald Trump’s record of hysteria and xenophobia, hysterical xenophobia, and fearmongering to lead the way instead of science.”
Biden's "reference to xenophobia was about Trump's long record of scapegoating others at a time when the virus was emerging from China," Bedingfield said, not to the travel restriction.
In a March 24 CNN interview, Biden did not directly refute Trump's assertion that Biden called Trump's Chinese travel restrictions xenophobic.
