Late night television host Jimmy Kimmel launched a vicious attack on the First Couple, focusing on the First Lady Melania Trump herself.
Instead of trying to unite or inspire the country during the COVID-19 crisis, Kimmel (or his writers) saw this as an opportunity to attack our leaders.
Kimmel responded to reports that Melania Trump tested negative for the novel coronavirus.
"Of course she has," Kimmel said. "She’s been six feet away from her husband since Stormy Daniels. Their marriage was the inventor of social distancing."
Not only is Kimmel's joke not funny… it also doesn't make any sense.
President Trump has also tested negative for COVID-19… so Melania wouldn't have been able to contract it from him anyways.
See Kimmel's "quarantine minilogue" below:
Kimmel made the joke by first attacking President Trump's desire to open the country again by Easter.
It's important to note that Trump never said the country would actually be up and running by Easter.
He said that he "hoped" that would happen, and Dr. Fauci has also confirmed that that was an aspirational goal, but that the president is flexible.
That didn't stop Kimmel from trying to force the joke, according to the Daily Beast:
“No, it makes you an idiot,” Kimmel replied, before adding, “I shouldn’t say it makes you an idiot. It reveals to us that you are an idiot.”
“Unfortunately, the lieutenant governor isn’t alone in this moron-athon,” the host continued, moving on to President Trump’s Fox News “town hall” event during which he said he plans to have the country open for business by Easter.
“By Easter?! That’s in two and half weeks!” Kimmel said. “Even Jesus is like, ‘Jesus, calm down, let’s think this through.’ We’re all going to die so the president can eat Peeps.”
Finally, Kimmel shared the news with viewers that first lady Melania Trump has tested negative for the coronavirus. “Of course she has,” he said. “She’s been six feet away from her husband since Stormy Daniels. Their marriage was the inventor of social distancing.”
It's hard to imagine Kimmel making the same joke regarding Bill and Hillary Clinton and Monica Lewinski.
It's well known that late night comedians have no problems skewering Republicans, but that they tend to invite Democrats on the show and treat them with mittens.
Trevor Noah, for instance, is another late night "comedian" who has used the crisis to yet again claim... or "joke"... that the president is "racist."
Have Democrats in the media, Hollywood, and DNC establishment not learned their lesson from 2016?
Part of the backlash is the cultural silencing of any conservative thought or opinion.
The fact that late night television hosts can openly and viciously mock Republicans but leave Democrats untouched is alarming.
Many people no longer trust entertainers or public figures to make knowledgable or fair statements when it comes to politics.
In fact, Kimmel has announced that Joe Biden will be on his show.
Can you imagine Kimmel hosting Trump or the First Lady on his show?
Deadline confirms the Biden booking:
Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to television on Monday (March 30) with remotely produced episodes. Host Jimmy Kimmel just dropped the news on Twitter and announced presidential candidate Joe Biden as his guest for tonight’s (March 25) abbreviated quarantine digital edition of the program.
Guests next week include: Samuel L Jackson, Jennifer Aniston, Jeff Tweedy, Grouplove and more. It has not been determined yet whether the show will move back to its regular 11:35 PM slot when it comes back with originals on ABC or will remain at 12:05 AM, following Nightline.
It appears that Joe Biden is trying to take a page out of Barack Obama's playbook.
Obama famously made inroads with celebrities to get favorable coverage by pop culture.
However, it remains to be seen if Joe Biden's gaffes will become fodder for late night television...
Or if the comedians will conveniently ignore that comedy gold.
